JASON EVANS' 100 WORD REVIEWS: The Personal History of David Copperfield

Who knew Dickens could be funny?

Film critic Jason Evans is giving you all you need to know about movies in exactly 100 words. Here is his 100-word-review of The Personal History of David Copperfield.

The Premise: Based on the classic Charles Dickens story (which is at least partly autobiographical), The Personal History of David Copperfield shows the difficult life of David (played as an adult by Dev Patel) from birth to adulthood. Set in the mid-1800s, David desperately wants to become a gentleman and writer, but his path is continually blocked as he is shifted from one troubled home to another. Along the way, he encounters a dizzying array of quirky characters played by notable actors like Tilda Swinton, Hugh Laurie, Gwendoline Christie, Peter Capaldi, Benedict Wong, and Ben Whishaw.

The 100 Words: Dickens stories are typically dark, dirty, and dreary, but this one is full of humor and light. It is easy to tell that the cast had great fun making this film and many of the characters are instantly endearing. The sets and cinematography are top-notch, transporting us to another era and dripping with atmosphere. The film exists in a post-race world where skin color is an afterthought, not a defining trait, and it is quite refreshing. Though the story does lag at times, the scrumptious scenery carries those parts, and the overall result is a joyful ride back in time.
