JASON EVANS' 100-WORD-REVIEWS: The Glorias

Artsy but also essential with a fabulous cast

Film critic Jason Evans is here to bring you what you need to know about movies in bite-sized chunks that are quick to read. Here is his 100-word-review of The Glorias.

The Premise: Simply put, this film is the biography of activist Gloria Steinem. By casting 4 different actresses as Steinem, the film is able to show how events as a young girl, teen, young adult, and mature woman all shaped the feminist icon. The film was written and directed by Julie Taymor (Frida, Across the Universe) and features Academy Award winners Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina, The Danish Girl) and Julianne Moore as the adult Glorias.

The 100 Words: Taymor is a talented filmmaker who often eschews conventional storytelling. In this film, her use of metaphysical devices to explain what is happening in Gloria’s head is hit-and-miss, sometimes a bit too “artsy.” But this is an essential story to tell and the outstanding cast does a wonderful job of helping us understand a woman fighting to change the world. The sexism Gloria encounters is over-the-top, but that was the reality of that era. This is a good film, an important one to watch, and a great tribute to a woman who has helped make the world a better place.
