JASON EVANS' 100 WORD REVIEWS: Mulan

Why did Disney need to do this?

Film critic Jason Evans has made it his mission to give you all you need to know about movies in just a few moments. His reviews are exactly 100 words long, not 101, not 99. Here is his 100 word review of Disney’s new live-action version of Mulan.

The Premise: Largely the same story as the 1998 animated film, Mulan is based on the legendary tale of a young Chinese girl who defies her country’s biases against women to become a warrior and save the nation from a ruthless invading army. The film stars Liu Yifei as Mulan and also features Donnie Yen (Rogue One), martial arts legend Jet Li, Jason Scott Lee (Dragon: the Bruce Lee Story), and Tzi Ma (The Farewell).

The 100 Words:  Though a lavish production with gorgeous scenery, Mulan still fails to answer the question, “why did Disney make this?” The film is a pale knock-off of the beloved cartoon (minus any humor or songs). By transitioning from cartoon to live-action the film is set in a more realistic world, but that only means the moments of fantasy produce confusion more than wonder. The climax is laughably awkward and baffling with characters doing things because they need to happen, not because it makes sense. I just wish Disney was inspired by something other than money when deciding to remake classic cartoons.
