JASON EVANS' 100-WORD-REVIEWS: Kajillionaire

Strange, for sure, but also compelling

Film critic Jason Evans is here to bring you what you need to know about movies in bite-sized chunks that are quick to read. Here is his 100-word-review of Kajillionaire.

The Premise: The Dyne Family – Robert (Richard Jenkins), Theresa (Debra Winger) and their daughter Old Dolio (Evan Rachel Wood) -- lives on the fringes of normal society. They are the kind of people who check pay phones for stray change and spend their days conning and scamming just enough money to get by. During one of their scams, involving an airplane ride and some “accidentally” lost luggage, they meet free spirited Melanie (Gina Rodriquez). She wants to join their schemes, but her presence causes Old Dolio to start questioning the strange life she has led until now.

The 100-Words: There’s no getting around the fact that writer/director Miranda July is decidedly quirky. The Dynes have a skewed view of the world and it is not always comfortable being around them. But the film drags you in and I found myself caring more about these characters than I expected. The acting here is fabulous, especially Wood, who leaves behind the glamour of Westworld for an emotionally resonant and human performance. This film isn’t for everyone – you have to be a little bit “artsy” to enjoy it – but it makes me excited to see where July will turn her eye next.
