JASON EVANS' 100 WORD REVIEWS: The Last Vermeer

A compelling look at a troubled time

Film Critic Jason Evans is here to tell you everything you need to know about movies in exactly 100 words. Here is his 100 word review of The Last Vermeer.

The Premise: In the aftermath of World War II, Captain Joseph Piller (Claes Bang) is assigned to look for Nazi collaborators in the Netherlands. His investigation into a painting purchased by Hermann Goring (Hitler’s right-hand man) leads him to Han van Meergeren (Guy Pearce). van Meergeren is a failed artist,  but a very successful art dealer. Everyone suspects that van Meergeren stole works of art from Jews and made a fortune by selling them to the Nazis, but Piller refuses to jump to conclusions and when he starts to follow the evidence, he discovers something truly shocking.

The 100 Words: This film should probably be called A Few Good Monuments Men as it seamlessly transitions from a Holocaust drama to a courtroom mystery. Pierce really transforms himself for this role and is captivating every minute he is on screen. The movie does meander at times, particularly when it gets too involved in Capt. Piller’s home life, but it keeps coming back to van Meergeren and we get reeled back in. Based on a true story, this is a compelling tale of the compromises some made to survive Nazi occupation and then how they dealt with the shame of those compromises.
