JASON EVANS' 100 WORD REVIEWS: Promising Young Woman

 Entertaining and Important

Film Critic Jason Evans makes it his business to tell you everything you need to know about movies in less time than it takes to reheat last night’s leftovers. His reviews are exactly 100 words (not 99, not 101). Here is his 100 word review of Promising Young Woman.

The Premise: Cassie (Carey Mulligan of Never Let Me Go, The Great Gatsby, and Mudbound) was a med school student until a terrible trauma caused her to drop out. Now, almost a decade later, she works as a coffee barista by day and spends her nights going to bars and nightclubs. But, she isn’t looking for a good time at night, she wants to teach a lesson to the kind of men who take advantage of women. But, things change when she meets one of her former classmates, Dr. Ryan Cooper (comedian Bo Burnham). As Cassie and Ryan’s relationship grows, she begins to question her unfulfilling quest for revenge. Promising Young Woman is the first feature film for Killing Eve writer/showrunner Emerald Fennell.

The 100 Words: Simultaneously relevant and a rollicking good time, this comedic thriller does a wonderful job of subverting expectations. Every time I thought I knew how it would go, it changed course in a believable and honest way, which is not easy to pull off. Mulligan’s performance is gut-wrenching and powerful. She and writer/director Fennell will deservedly get lots of awards attention. You need to turn off the logic side of your brain a bit toward the end, but that is entirely forgivable in a film this enjoyable and important. I guarantee, you’ll be talking about this one after it is over.
