Turn your brain off and enjoy the insanity
You don’t have time for long-winded movie reviews, so Jason Evans has made it his mission to give you all you need to know about the movies in exactly 100 words. Here is his 100-word review of Godzilla vs. Kong.
The Premise: After five years of peace, Godzilla has
begun attacking human cities again, specifically places where the company Apex
Cybernetics has locations. Bernie Hayes (Brian Tyree
Henry), a conspiracy theory podcaster, thinks Apex is up to
something sinister and teams up with Godzilla defender Madison Russell (Millie
Bobby Brown) to find out. Meanwhile, the only other living Titan on the planet,
King Kong, is being hidden because scientist Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall) believes
Kong and Godzilla have an ancient rivalry. She is worried Godzilla will attack
if he finds out where Kong is based. Apex CEO Walter Simmons (Demián Bichir)
recruits geologist Nathan Lind (Alexander
Skarsgård) to lead a mission into the “hollow Earth” to find a
mysterious energy source that will allow him to defeat Godzilla once and for
all… but the only one who knows the way to get to the energy source is Kong
himself.
The 100 Words: This film is just as bonkers as it
sounds. The story is overly convoluted and goes to wild extremes as an excuse
to bring us from one insane monster battle to the next. But, amazingly, it
largely works. As much as I was shaking my head at how ludicrous it was, I kept
on smiling whenever the action heated up and found myself captivated by the visual
effects. None of the actors really matter here, I barely remember the character
names. The movie is all about two giants going toe-to-toe and I’m almost embarrassed
to say I really enjoyed it.
