JASON EVANS' 100 WORD REVIEWS: Mortal Kombat

True to the video game, with plenty of action but not much story

You don’t have time for long-winded movie reviews, so Jason Evans has made it his mission to give you all you need to know about the movies in exactly 100 words. Here is his 100-word review of Mortal Kombat.

The Premise: Cole Young (Lewis Tan) is a struggling MMA fighter. He has heart, but never seems to win the big matches. After one of his fights, he is pursued by Sub-Zero, a martial arts master who also has the power to create ice swords and literally freeze his opponents. Cole barely escapes and soon learns that he is a descendant of Hanso Hasashi (legendary Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada). Fate has determined that Cole will be a part of the latest round of Mortal Combat, a fight between Earthrealm and Outerworld. Cole begins to train in the hope of finding his special power in time to defend Earth from the Outerworld invaders.

The 100 Words: This film based on a video game is more arcade action than a cohesive story. It is basically ten minutes of bloody action followed by five minutes of exposition and then ten more minutes of bloody action… just rinse and repeat for the 2 hour run time. I doubt anyone comes into this flick expecting a clever story or meaningful character development so the shortcomings in those areas can be forgiven. The fight scenes are well-choreographed, the effects look good, and if you want to watch a vapid, bloody, video game come to life, you could do a lot worse.
