JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: Without Remorse

 More frenzied than fun

Film critic Jason Evans has made it his mission to tell you everything you need to know about movies in exactly 100 words (not 99, not 101). Here is his 100-word review of The Courier.

The Premise: Based on a Tom Clancy novel, Without Remorse is the story of Navy SEAL John Clark (Michael B Jordan). As Clark’s unit is rescuing a CIA operative who was captured in Syria, they accidentally engage with some Russian troops. The Russians want revenge and send a squad of assassins to America. The Russians kill several members of the SEAL team but when they come to get Clark, he fights them off. Sadly, his pregnant wife dies during the attack. The Secretary of Defense (Guy Pearce) helps Clark find out who was behind the attack. But, Clark’s quest for justice could end up starting World War III.

The 100 Words: There are several excellent action sequences and Jordan gives it his all in every scene, but the whole thing somehow manages to be formulaic and confusing at the same time. It probably would have worked better on a big screen but I had trouble understanding the dialogue and following the action (almost everything happens at night). The convoluted scheme at the center of the film never really makes sense and doesn’t fit the modern world; it has a real 80s cold war feel. This so-so flick is mostly just trying to set up a sequel that does not feel deserved.
