JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: Black Widow

They waited forever to make… this?!?!

Critic Jason Evans has made it his mission to tell you everything you need to know about movies and TV in exactly 100 words (not 99, not 101). Here is his 100-word review of Marvel’s Black Widow.

The Premise: Black Widow is the story of what Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) was doing in between Civil War (2016) and Infinity War (2018). With her Avengers friends either on the run or in lock-up, Natasha is all alone. She is soon dragged into a conspiracy connected to her past as a Russian assassin. She will need the help of her adopted spy family -- sister Yelena (Florence Pugh), father Alexei (David Harbour), and mother Melina (Rachel Weisz) – to find the Red Room where the Widows are based.

The 100 Words: If this film had been released in 2017 it might feel more interesting, but coming in the wake of Natasha’s death in Endgame, the movie lacks urgency and importance. Natasha has no arc, her character doesn’t change or do anything all that interesting. Frankly, this feels more like an introduction to Yelena than a tribute to Natasha. Pugh is great and has some very funny lines (so does Harbour) and there a few decent fight scenes, but the villain is blah (the kiss of death for Marvel movies) and Black Widows ends up at low end of all MCU films.
