JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: The Tomorrow War

As it moves into the future, the film falls apart

The Premise: In 2022, Dan Forester (Chris Pratt) is a former Green Beret who is now living the quiet life as a school teacher with his wife (Betty Gilpin) and daughter. One day, a group of soldiers from 30 years in the future arrive and tell the world that planet Earth will soon be under attack by aliens. The future needs humans from 2022 to help fight the aliens. Dan is soon drafted (along with the always funny Sam Richardson and Mary Lynn Rajskub from 24) to go into the future and fight a seemingly unbeatable foe. The film also stars J.K. Simmons as Dan’s father and Yvonne Strahovski (The Handmaid’s Tale) as a military scientist in the future.

The 100 Words: The first third is actually pretty good. They set up the premise nicely -- the time travel explanation is workable, and Richardson provides some great moments of humor -- but the script grows increasingly stupid as it moves along. The fights with the aliens are like watching a bad video game and the ending was 100% ripped off from Aliens. It feels like Pratt was just taking a paycheck on this one, as his character is largely emotionless and uninteresting. Watching this film, it is easy to see why Paramount gave it to Amazon and did not bother with a theatrical release.
