JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: Space Jam: A New Legacy

 Nonsense and not fun

Critic Jason Evans has made it his mission to tell you everything you need to know about movies and TV in exactly 100 words (not 99, not 101). Here is his 100-word review of Space Jam: A New Legacy.

The Premise: Lebron James is a bad father (yup, that’s the premise) who is totally obsessed with turning his two sons into basketball stars even though his youngest son, Dom, is more interested in making computer games. When Lebron accidentally insults a rogue A.I. (Don Cheadle) being used by Warner Bros., he and Dom are sucked into the computer world. Soon, Lebron is teamed up with Bugs Bunny and other classic cartoon characters in a computer-generated basketball game against the A.I.’s team of titans. Whoever loses will be stuck in the digital world forever. And the A.I. team has an ace up their sleeve... Dom is playing for them.

The 100 Words: The story makes no sense and is rarely funny. The film seems to be written for young kids, but keeps trying to entertain adults at the same time. A good writer might accomplish this but with 6 different credited screenwriters, it just fails on both accounts. Lebron is not much of an actor and, frankly, he’s not all that likeable in this role. But the biggest sin is the Warner IP that is constantly being thrown at you. It’s like Ready Player One on steroids. None of it serves the plot, it’s just characters showing up because Warner owns them.
