JASON EVANS' 100 WORD REVIEWS: Marry Me

 Cute, but obvious

Film Critic Jason Evans is on a mission to tell you everything you need to know about movies in less time than it takes to fall for love at first sight. His reviews are exactly 100 words (not 99, not 101). This is his 100 word review of Marry Me.

The Premise – You know what you are going to get as we approach Valentine’s Day… romcoms about mismatched couples who somehow find their way to happily ever after. Marry Me is the story of superstar singer Kat Valdez (Jennifer Lopez) who is planning to marry her singer beau, Bastian (Colombian singer Maluma), in front of a live concert audience. When she catches Bastian cheating only moments before it is time to say “I do” she cannot go through with it. Instead, she locks eyes with one of the concert-goers, math teacher Charlie (Owen Wilson), and says she will marry him instead. They are a total mess at first, she’s an international celebrity and he doesn’t even own an iPhone or have a social media account, but they slowly realize they may have feelings for each other.

The 100 Words – Look, I know this plot is far-fetched, but the story still must be built on honesty and believability. I needed to feel that these two total opposites could fall for each other but the script was too rushed. Charlie goes from skeptical to head-over-heels very quickly and very much against character. At times it was like watching a music video, with JLo belting out tunes every few minutes, rarely advancing the story. Bottom line, despite a cast that is trying their hardest, there just wasn’t enough to this story to make the film work in my head or my heart.
