JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: Thor Love and Thunder

 An uneven effort

Film critic Jason Evans is here to tell you everything you need to know about movies faster than a bolt of lightning. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (99 doesn’t tell you enough but 101 is going overboard). Here is his 100-word review of Thor: Love and Thunder.

The Premise: Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is traveling the universe with the Guardians of the Galaxy, fighting battles for worthy causes and at peace with himself, even if his existence feels aimless. Back on Earth, New Asgard has become a tourist attraction run by Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson). One night, Asgard is attacked by an alien named Gorr (Christian Bale) who is using a magical sword to kill gods all over the universe. Gorr is driven off, but takes something truly valuable to the Asgardians. Thor goes after Gorr with the help of Valkyrie, his best friend Korg (voiced by director Taika Waititi), and Thor’s ex-girlfriend Jane (Natalie Portman), who has found god-like powers of her own.

The 100 Words: This film never quite captures the mix of zany humor and emotional storytelling that made Ragnarok one of the best in the MCU. Waititi is trying too hard and the result is a terribly uneven viewing experience with juvenile jokes alongside deep existential questions. Thor’s character arc feels forced and I’m still not sure what journey the other characters were on. It is also maddening that this story does little to advance the plot of the larger MCU. There are laughs and action, but you never feel emotionally invested. L&T isn’t a bad film, just not a very good one.
