JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: Black Adam

DC still doesn’t make good comic book movies

Film critic Jason Evans is here to tell you everything you need to know about movies in less time than it takes to explain what an antihero is. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (99 is too few and 101 is too much). Here is his 100-word review of Black Adam.

The Premise: Long ago, the people of Kahndaq were enslaved by an evil king who wanted to create a special crown that would give him the power of evil spirits. But, a group of good wizards (led by Djimon Hounsou, playing the same role as he played in Shazam!) empowered a peasant named Teth-Adam (Dwayne Johnson) with the power to defeat the evil king. In modern times, a group of mercenaries are looking for the crown and they awaken Adam, who is again called upon to defend the people of Kahndaq. But, a group of heroes from Amanda Waller’s (Viola Davis) Justice Society also want the crown. They include Hawkman (Aldis Hodge) and Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan). Will the Justice Society beat Adam to the artifact or will the mercenaries get it first?

The 100 Words: If that description of the plot sounds confusing that’s because this nonsense story is just an excuse for various CGI-laden action scenes. The movie cares more about explosions than explanations and punches than punchlines. They even mute Johnson’s considerable charm, giving him little to do other than scowl and flex his muscles. DC doesn’t understand that character development matters. We are introduced to five new heroes and end up caring about none of them. If you want mindless visual effects, fine -- but if you want to care about what is happening on screen, don’t go to a DC movie.

One Final Note: Black Adam contains a post-credit scene clearly designed to set up a future DC movie. I'm not sure I have ever heard an audience go crazy like they did during this post-credit scene. The audience reaction almost makes the rest of the middling movie worth seeing... almost.
