JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: Rosaline

Amusing New Take On An Old Classic

Film critic Jason Evans is here to tell you everything you need to know about movies in less time than it takes to recite a few lines of Shakespeare. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (99 is too few and 101 is too much). Here is his 100-word review of Rosaline.

The Premise: You may know the story of Romeo and Juliet, but do you know the story of Rosaline? She was Juliet’s cousin and was actually Romeo’s first girlfriend! This flick trades tragedy for comedy and puts a new twist on the classic tale by adding modern language and attitudes (though it is still set in old time Verona). The film stars Kaitlyn Dever (Booksmart and Dopesick) as Rosaline and includes both Bradley Whitford and Minnie Driver in supporting roles. It will debut on Hulu.

The 100 Words: Cute and breezy with a charming cast, Roasline has just enough laughs to keep you from minding that everything that happens in the story is 100% predictable. Dever is a real talent and Driver brightens up every scene she is in as Rosaline’s handmaid. I enjoyed the modern attitudes mixed with Shakespearian settings and characters. The short 90-minute run time and story that doesn’t demand a lot of attention should work well on streaming. Even though Rosaline is clearly aimed at a target demo of teen girls, I think others may find enough laughs to make this a worthy watch.
