JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS-- Avatar: The Way of the Water

A visual treat with an incomplete story

Film critic Jason Evans is here to tell you everything you need to know about movies that are so brief and to the point, you could read it underwater without taking a breath. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (99 is too few and 101 is too much). Here is his 100-word review of Avatar: The Way of the Water.

The Premise: More than a decade after the events of Avatar, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) is now leading the Na’vi on raids against humans who want to mine Pandora of all of her natural resources. Though he wants the humans gone, his main priority is protecting his family including his wife Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), and his 2 sons and daughter. The family has also adopted a teenaged Na’vi girl, Kiri (Sigourney Weaver), and a young human boy, Spider, who was left behind when the humans originally fled. When the increasingly violent human invaders threaten them, Jake and the family leave the forest to seek refuge among a clan of Na’ve who live in the sea reefs. But, Jake soon learns that an old enemy has reemerged and will stop at nothing to get revenge on the entire Sully clan. The film clocks in at 3+ hours in length and is written and directed by James Cameron (Avatar, Terminator, Titanic).
The 100 Words: A marvel to look at, you will get sucked back into the immersive world that made the original Avatar a mega-hit. Despite the long run-time, I was never bored. That said, the story feels like a placeholder with little resolution. Cameron says he wants to make many more sequels and I think this film is just putting pieces in place, not really doing anything interesting with them. None of the characters evolve much or have a character arc in this film. It is still worth watching, but I left the theater unsatisfied and frustrated at the simplistic and silly script.
