JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania

Its fine… but nothing special

Film critic Jason Evans is on a quest to tell you everything you need to know about movies in less time than it takes to squash a bug with your shoe. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (99 is too few and 101 is too much). Here is his 100-word review of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

The Premise: The first film in phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe starts in San Francisco where Scott Lang/Ant-man (Paul Rudd) is leading the good life. A world-famous Avenger, he spends his time promoting his new bestselling book and hanging out with the people he loves -- Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly); her mom and dad, Hank (Michael Douglas) and Janet (Michelle Pfeifer); and his daughter Cassie (Kathryn Newton). But his simple life is shattered when an accident sucks all five of them deep into the sub-atomic quantum realm, a place full of fantastic creatures that is ruled by the ruthless Kang (Jonathan Majors). Kang will stop at nothing to escape the quantum realm and threatens to kill our heroes if they don’t help him. The film is directed by longtime Ant-man director Peyton Reed and features a cameo appearance by Bill Murray.

The 100-Words: Lots of talk but not much action. This flick is here to explain multiverse rules, the concept of variants, and introduce the dangerous Kang. Ok, fine, but we largely knew all that already. It has the usual Ant-man jokes but they feel out of place amid the ominous threats. The quantum realm looks fabulous and all the actors are doing their part** but the script feels like a first draft that needed more purpose to it. There isn’t a single character that changes or evolves during the film. It’s ok, but Marvel is still struggling to find its post-Thanos footing.

**-- Even when they have little to do. Michael Douglas is just seated in a chair for most of the film and Evangeline Lilly’s Wasp plays a surprisingly small role in the story.

Note: There are 2 post-credit scenes and confirm that Jonathan Majors is going to be very, very busy with Marvel stuff for the next few years.
