JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: Oppenheimer

 A brilliant biopic

Film critic Jason Evans has made it his mission to tell you everything you need to know about movies in less time than it takes to set off a bomb. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (99 would be too short, but 101 is just excessive). Here is his 100-word review of Oppenheimer

The Premise – Set across several shifting timelines, we trace the successes and failures of the “father of the atomic bomb.” Robert Oppenheimer was a genius, a womanizer, a liberal, arrogant, and charismatic. He was also among the most famous and most important scientists in modern history. This film looks at what it took for him to build the first A-bomb and how many in the government turned against him when he said we should be careful with this terrible power. The film features an outrageously talented cast including Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer; Emily Blunt as his wife Kitty; Matt Damon as the General heading up the Manhattan Project; Florence Pugh as Oppenheimer’s lover; Robert Downey Jr. as Atomic Energy Commission chairman Lewis Strauss; and numerous famous Hollywood actors in key supporting roles including Josh Hartnett, Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, Casey Affleck, Matthew Modine, Jack Quaid, Dane Dehaan, Alden Ehrenreich, Tony Goldwyn, Jason Clark, Gary Oldman, and others. Oppenheimer, which has a 3-hour running time, is written and directed by 5-time Academy Award nominee Christopher Nolan.

The 100 Words – A challenging film that simultaneously educates and enthralls. Yes, it feels a bit like a history lesson, but this is some damn important history to know about. Though it is mostly 3 hours of people talking, I found my pulse racing, especially as we approach the first A-bomb test. A visual marvel where light and sound are so prominent, they might as well be characters in the story. It’s almost impossible to imagine this film not getting multiple Oscar nominations, including Nolan, Murphy, and Downey. You will want to talk about what you loved about it after it is over.
