JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: The Marvels

Zany in all the right ways

Film critic Jason Evans has made it his mission to tell you everything you need to know about movies and TV in less time than it takes to pet your kitten. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (99 is not enough, but 101 is too long). Here is his 100-word review of The Marvels.

The Premise – Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) is investigating problems in the jump point system that allow space ships to travel across the universe, when she finds that her light-based powers have become entangled with similar powers wielded by Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani). Soon, the three female superheroes are accidentally teleporting all over the universe. Can the three heroes figure out a way to work together to stop Kree warlord Darr-Ben (Zawe Ashton) from stealing the natural resources of other planets. The film is directed by Nia DaCosta (Candyman) and also stars Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.

The 100-Words - Borrowing the humor and silliness formula from the Guardians films, I was LOLing throughout much of The Marvels. Vellani’s giddy energy is a standout and she nearly steals the film. She and the space cat, “Goose,” are real highlights. There is a sequence on a musical planet that was as good as Marvel gets at humor. But the action scenes are stale, Darr-Ben is yet another dull Marvel villain, and the ending is confusing and uninspired. This isn’t up to the level of Marvel’s best, but is still a good time at the movies and an easy film to watch.
