JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: Moana 2

A pale imitation of the original

Film critic Jason Evans is here to tell you about movies in less time than it takes to surf a wave. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (99 is never enough and 101 is too verbose). Here is his 100-word review of Moana 2.

The Premise: Set a few years after the original film, Moana (Auli’i Cravahlo) is desperately searching the seas to find other inhabited islands. But, though she discovers evidence of other islanders, she cannot find an actual person. After getting a message from her ancestors, Moana forms a ragtag crew to search for the cursed island of Montufetu, which is key to reuniting all the people of the islands. And she knows she will need the help of Maui (Dwayne Johnson) to find it. The film was originally conceived as a series of Disney+ but was converted into a feature film.

The 100-words: Though it has high-quality animation, a gorgeous color palate, and a good voice cast, this is a poor sequel to a beloved original. The story here reeks of something converted from a longer-form TV show. It is disjointed with too many under-developed characters and a confusing series of quests and tasks leading up to a weak finale. The film also suffers from uninspiring music and misses the songwriting magic of Lin-Manuel Miranda. Unlike Disney’s best animated movies, this one is really just for a very young audience as I suspect adults and teens will find this film dull and confusing.

NOTE – if you go, stick around through the credits as there are a couple post-credit scenes designed to set up a future Moana film (or TV show?).
