JASON EVANS' 100-WORD REVIEWS: Captain America: Brave New World

Go in with low expectations and you may be pleasantly surprised

Film critic Jason Evans is here to tell you about movies in less time than it takes to throw a shield. His reviews are exactly 100 words long (99 is never enough and 101 is too much). Here is his 100-word review of Captain America: Brave New World.

The Premise: Gen. Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross (Harrison Ford, replacing the late William Hurt) has left the military and been elected President of the U.S. As one of his first tasks, he asks Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), the new Captain America, to re-form the Avengers. Wilson is skeptical about working with Ross but agrees to carry out some missions. Meanwhile, Ross is dealing with a brewing crisis, an international fight over the rights to the minerals inside “Celestial Island,” the giant rock formation that emerged from the Earth at the end of The Eternals movie. When one of Wilson’s old friends leads an assassination attempt on Ross, Wilson begins investigating Ross’ past and uncovers a secret plot to turn the President into a weapon of mass destruction.

The 100-words: While not on the level of Marvel’s excellent early films, this is still a decent political thriller with strong action sequences. On the bad side, there’s a lot of exposition that bogs down the script and for some reason the marketing for the film gives away its big twist ending. As for Mackie’s Cap, he’s a bit flat and humorless and the film could have used fewer characters to keep track of. But it held my attention throughout and moved with good pace. Though not great, this is a bit of a return to form for the sagging Marvel franchise.
